Fresh Water Recovery for a Sustainable Oil & Gas Future

Recovering fresh water from produced and flowback water is a challenge, but a necessary one for the oil & gas industry. Water (re)use requirements are growing and produced and flowback water disposal is under increasing environmental pressure

Brine treatment for the oil & gas sector - Salttech

The challenges in the oil and gas industry

Within the Oil and Gas industry, the treatment of produced water and flow back water is an ever-increasing task. A task that is becoming more and more urgent. This challenge is caused by stricter disposal regulations, or by water scarcity in certain regions of the world. Without further actions, this scarcity will only increase.

For the production of Oil and Gas, it is therefore no longer justified to withdraw drinkable water from aquifers. If we do continue with this, the consequences will be incalculable.

The Oil and Gas industry must drive decarbonation for cleaner resource production and preserve precious natural aquifer resources for human consumption.

Oil & Gas

  • Scarcity of fresh water
  • Increasingly strict disposal regulations
  • Need for a decreasing carbon footprint

The Dyvar® technology

A robust, reliable treatment system producing freshwater from produced water and flowback waters.

Our Dyvar® technology is a robust, reliable concentration and crystallization technology that concentrates and (partly) crystallized brines and produced waters into clean water and hypersaline brines. In many cases, this clean water can be used for multiple applications and the produced concentrate can be applied as well completion fluid or further crystallized to harvest valuable minerals . Our Dynamic Vapor Recovery Technology was a key element of Aramco’s World Oil Award 2022 winning  “A Sustainable Produced Water Management Technology for Circular Water Economy” project.

Dyvar® in the MENA Oil & Gas Sector

Aramco’s World Oil Award 2022 winning  “A Sustainable Produced Water Management Technology for Circular Water Economy” project.

In Saudi Arabia, Dyvar® technology has been successfully applied at scale in cooperation with our partners NESR and Aramco. We treat hypersaline produced water (<100,000 mg/l TDS) to Minimal Liquid Discharge (MLD) levels, reducing the salt concentration to less than 100 mg/l TDS. This enables the reuse of water for industrial and agricultural purposes.

At the same time, the oversaturated brine (>350,000 mg/l TDS) has been demonstrated as a valuable feedstock for drilling fluids, creating a closed-loop solution and supporting a 100% circular economy.

Within the wider MENA region, Salttech has established a strong partnership with National Energy Services Reunited Corp (NESR), the National Champion of the MENA region in oilfield services. Together, we are developing multiple Dyvar®-based treatment plants, each capable of converting 25,000 to 100,000 barrels per day (bbl/d) of produced water into freshwater, well completion fluids, or, where applicable, recovered minerals.

Dyvar® in practice

  • From high salinity to reusable water
Dyvar concentrates and treats high TDS streams, typically up to 200,000 plus mg/l, turning challenging brines into high quality water and supporting a circular water approach.
  • High recovery with minimal waste
With water recoveries of 85% and higher, Dyvar significantly reduces waste volumes while treating produced water and other saline feeds efficiently.
  • Energy efficient by design
Dyvar uses internal heat recycling and smart low heat operation to keep energy intensity low and operating costs under control.
  • Pathway to ZLD
Dyvar produces a concentrated brine stream that can be pushed into crystallization for salt removal, supporting zero liquid discharge and reducing disposal dependency.
  • Optional mineral value creation
Depending on the feed composition, the concentrated stream can also be used for selective mineral recovery, turning a waste stream into a potential revenue stream.
